What is Psychic Medium? Everything You Need to Know

Have you ever wondered what a psychic medium actually does? Maybe you've seen a show on TV, heard a friend mention a reading, or felt a pull toward learning more about connecting with loved ones who have passed. If you're curious but not quite sure where to start, you're in the right place.

In this post, I'm going to walk you through exactly what a psychic medium is, how it differs from a psychic, what to expect from a reading, and some of the most common misconceptions I encounter in my work. My goal is simple: to give you clear, grounded, and honest information so you can make sense of something that might feel a little mysterious right now.

Psychic vs. Psychic Medium: What’s the Difference?

This is one of the first questions I’m asked, and it’s a great one. The two are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing.

A psychic reads and interprets energy. They may tune into your past, present, or potential future, your current emotional state, your relationships, or the energy around decisions you’re facing. Think of it as reading the energy field around a living person.

A psychic medium does all of that, but also has the ability to connect with those who have crossed over. This could be loved ones, family members, friends, even beloved pets who are no longer living. A medium acts as a bridge between the world of the living and the spirit world.

Put simply: all mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. As a psychic medium, I work with both — reading the energy of the person in front of me while also opening a channel to communicate with those in spirit.

How Does a Psychic Medium Actually Receive Information?

One of the things people are most curious about is how mediums receive the messages they deliver. It’s not like picking up a telephone — it’s a far more subtle and layered process.

I work primarily through three channels, often called “the clairs”:

•       Clairvoyance (clear seeing): I receive images, symbols, and visual impressions in my mind’s eye. These might be scenes, objects, colors, or even a flash of a face.

•       Clairsentience (clear feeling): I physically or emotionally feel what the person in spirit is communicating. I might feel a tightness in my chest, a sense of warmth, or an overwhelming wave of love.

•       Claircognizance (clear knowing): Sometimes I simply know something without being able to explain how. The information just arrives, fully formed, as a deep inner knowing.

Often, all three work together in a single reading. I might see an image, feel an emotion connected to it, and simultaneously know exactly what it means for the person sitting with me.

What is Evidential Mediumship?

You may have heard the term “evidential mediumship” and wondered what it means. In short, evidential mediumship is about providing specific, verifiable details during a reading — things that only your loved one in spirit would know — as proof that the connection is real.

This isn’t about vague statements that could apply to anyone. Evidential mediumship is about delivering precise, meaningful details: a nickname, a shared memory, a specific object, a moment only the two of you knew about.

The evidence is what transforms a reading from simply “interesting” into something deeply healing and transformative. When a client hears something that could only have come from their person, the experience often goes far beyond curiosity — it becomes a moment of profound healing.

Real Readings, Real Healing: Client Story

The Butterfly Release

One of the most moving readings I’ve ever conducted involved a woman who came to me hoping to connect with her mother who had passed. During the session, her mother began showing me an image of a park — not a gravesite, as I first thought, but a peaceful outdoor setting filled with butterflies. I could feel the significance of this image strongly, and I asked the woman if she had attended a butterfly release in her mother’s memory.

She said no — but then something extraordinary unfolded. As I tuned in further, I realized the butterfly release I was seeing wasn’t hers. It was mine. My own mother had passed just one month before hers, and the hospice company had organized a butterfly release ceremony in honor of my mother and others who had passed that year.

We discovered that both of us had been at the same ceremony. Our mothers, who had never known each other in life, appeared to be connected in spirit. And it felt as though spirit itself had guided this woman to schedule her reading with me on that particular day, at that particular moment in both of our grief journeys. It was a reminder that healing doesn’t just happen for the client — sometimes, it happens for the medium too.

3 Common Misconceptions About Psychic Mediums (And the Truth)

Misconception #1: Psychic Mediums Predict the Future

This is probably the most widespread misunderstanding I encounter. Mediumship is not about predicting lottery numbers or telling you exactly what’s going to happen in your life. My work is about connecting with energy and spirit — delivering messages of love, healing, and guidance from those who have passed, and reading the energy around your current life circumstances.

The future is always shaped by free will. I can tune into patterns and energies, but I’m not a fortune teller — and any honest medium will tell you the same.

Misconception #2: It’s All Fake

Skepticism is healthy, and I completely understand it. The world has seen fraudulent “psychics” who use cold reading techniques and vague language to manipulate vulnerable people. That is not mediumship. It is deception, and it gives genuine practitioners a bad name.

Evidential mediumship is designed specifically to counter this skepticism. When a medium delivers precise, specific, verifiable information that only a loved one in spirit could know, it’s not guesswork. I’ve sat across from complete skeptics who left their reading in tears, not because I told them what they wanted to hear, but because they received information no one could have known.

Misconception #3: You Have to Be Born With the Gift

This is one I feel strongly about. While some people do seem to come into this world with a natural sensitivity to spirit, the ability to connect with and develop mediumistic gifts is available to everyone. We are all spiritual beings, and with the right guidance, intention, and practice, many people can open and develop their own intuitive and mediumistic abilities.

Think of it like music. Some people are born with perfect pitch, but almost anyone can learn to play an instrument and create something beautiful. The same is true of mediumship. You don’t need to wait for lightning to strike or for another medium to tell you that you are going to be a medium.  The door is open and it is up to you to make the choice to walk through.

What Can You Expect From A Reading With a Psychic Medium?

Whether you’re booking a private one-on-one session or attending a group gallery reading, here’s what you can generally expect:

•       An open, non-judgmental space. Readings are a sacred and confidential experience. You won’t be judged for your grief, your questions, or your skepticism.

•       Specific, evidential information. I aim to deliver details that are meaningful and specific to you and not vague generalities.

•       A recorded session (for online readings). All Zoom readings are recorded so you can revisit the messages at your own pace because often, things that don’t make sense in the moment become clear later. You are also free to record during your in-person reading.

•       Healing, not performance. A reading isn’t a show. It’s a deeply personal experience designed to bring comfort, validation, and peace.

Final Thoughts

Psychic mediumship is not about fear, tricks, or the unknown. At its heart, it is about love — the love that continues beyond physical death, the love that wants to reach you, reassure you, and remind you that the connection you had with your person never truly ends.

Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, I hope this post has given you something to think about. The door between worlds is always open. Sometimes, all it takes is a willingness to knock
